Australia announces five significant study permit changes for International students
Understanding the importance of international students to the Australian economy, the Government of Australia took five significant steps to provide relief to international students wishing to study in Australia. In a joint media release issued on Monday, 20 July 2020, the Acting Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, Mr. Alan Tudge has stated that “We are a welcoming nation with a world-class education system and some of the lowest rates of COVID-19 in the world. Students want to study here, and we want to welcome them back in a safe and measured way when it is safe to do so.”
Five Major Visa Changes for International Students
Here are the five significant changes that are announced by The Morrison Government to ensure that Australia remains the priority destination for international students.
Student Visa Resumption
The Australian government will resume issuing student visas, allowing students to begin preparing for travel to Australia so that they can fly once the travel restrictions are lifted.
Free of charge visa application for returning students
The government has waived student application fees for students who were unable to complete their studies within the current visa validity due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Post-study work visa benefit
The Australian government has assured that student visa holders who study online due to coronavirus pandemic will receive Post-study work visa benefits once they arrive in Australia.
PSW visa benefit to returning graduate-students
Further, the government has also assured students who have completed their studies from an Australian institution and now unable to return to Australia due to covid-19 that they can also apply for a post-study work visa from outside Australia.
More time to submit English language results
The Australian government has also given relief to new students who are unable to take the English language test due to COVID-19. The government will provide more time to students in areas where English testing centers are closed.
Minister for Education Dan Tehan said the changes would give international students confidence in their visa arrangements so they can make plans to study in Australia when it is safe to do so. Our remarkable efforts in controlling the spread of the virus mean we can begin to welcome back international students in a COVID safe way once state borders re-open and face-to-face learning resumes”.
