Grand opportunity for students to save their Canadian dream through the new 2-stage Study Permit process

The Canadian government has made significant changes to facilitate international students in starting their study programs from their home countries without completing the entire Study permit process, without affecting their Post-Graduation Work Permit duration. The new measures were announced by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada’s Minister, Marco Mendicino. In the News released by IRCC on July 14 he quotes:

“The pandemic has had a significant impact on international students and the Canadian institutions and communities that host them. This is why we have implemented a series of measures to support them. We value the contribution of young people seeking a high-quality education in Canada, and we’re making every effort to minimize how current challenges affect their plans and dreams for the future.”

The measures include the following benefits for students.

Fast-track processing for complete applications:

IRCC says students who submit their applications fully completed will benefit from fast-track study-permit processing.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Benefit:

If students study online until the end of 2020, the duration of their post-graduation work permit will not be affected.

The temporary 2-stage approval process

Students who cannot submit complete all the requirements of Study-Permit application due to coronavirus pandemic, and who want to begin their Canadian educational program online will be able to start their study programs under the Temporary 2-stage approval process. The 2-stage process will only be available to those students who want to begin their course this autumn and submit their study permit application by September 15, 2020.

The new and temporary Study-Permit process consists of approval-in-principle and eligibility/admissibility stages.

Stage 1: Approval-in-principle

Students who fulfill the following requirements will be issued approval-in-principle, enabling them to study programs online.

1. Letter of acceptance
2. Proof of funds
3. Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (for those students who want to study in Quebec)
4. Evidence that the applicant is a genuine student
5. Disclosure of family ties to Canada (if any)

Stage 2: Final decision

In the second stage, the authorities will evaluate the following requirements before making the final decision.

1. Immigration Medical Examination
2. Security-Police Certificate
3. Biometrics

It is worth mentioning here that getting approval-in-principle does not mean that the students will undoubtedly receive their study permit. The applicants will receive final approval once they have met all the conditions of both the stages.

On the successful completion of both the stages, the applicant will be able to fly to Canada when travel restrictions are lifted.
