Duolingo English Test: an IELTS alternative
Due to the coronavirus epidemic, most of the English language testing centers in India are closed. Consequently, applicants wishing to get an English language assessment to apply abroad for studies are now turning to online options. One such option which is increasingly becoming popular among students is Duolingo English Test. For DET, applicants are not required to visit testing centers to take the exam. They can take the test online anytime, anywhere. Here are the answers to some of the questions that students ask.
What is the Duolingo English Test?
Duolingo English Test is an alternative to IELTS Academic, and you can take it online from your home. The nature of the test is adaptive, which means the difficulty level increases with each correct answer, and if your answer is wrong, then the next question gets easier. The technology behind the test enables Duolingo to pinpoint your level of English proficiency in a short time. The entire test takes approximately one hour to complete, and the test result comes out within two days. The cost of the test is just $49, which is very economical.
Why should I take the Duolingo English Test?
If you are planning to study abroad, you may take this test to fulfill the admission requirements. Thousands of universities and colleges worldwide accept it as proof of applicants' ability to communicate in the English language.
What are the requirements to take the test?
To take the test, you will need a microphone, speakers, webcam, and a reliable internet connection having 2 Mbps speed. Also, your room must be well-lit, and there should not be anyone except you. During the test, your face and ears must be clearly visible. Headphones, mobile phones, and taking notes is prohibited.
What questions come in the Duolingo English Test?
The Duolingo English test has two portions. The first part contains a variety of questions on speaking, reading, writing, and listening, for example, reading a passage and filling the gaps, selecting the written word after listing, describing an image in writing, etc.
The second portion consists of a video interview and a writing sample. In the video Interview, the test taker speaks on a topic for 1-3 minutes. The test taker's performance in the first portion determines what questions he or she will get for a video interview and writing Sample. Although the second portion is ungraded, the responses are sent to the university or college to which the student applies.
