Study in Canada Update 19 Sept 2024: Implications of Policy Changes for Future Students
Canada's Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced several new measures on September 19 IST, which will directly affect students wishing to study in Canada or continue their studies there. These changes have been made for the better future of Canada's immigration, labor market needs, and international students coming to study there, which are as follows.
New limit on study permit
According to the new update, the Canadian government aims to reduce the 2024 target by 10% in 2025, under which the number of students getting study permits will be reduced from 485,000 to 437,000. After this, an attempt will be made to stabilize it in 2026.
The new measure will increase the competition. This means the students should not wait until the last minute to secure their seats. They should look for different colleges and universities that offer courses according to their academics.
Cap on masters and PhD students
This limit will also affect master's and PhD level students. The update states that 12% allocation places will be reserved for master's and PhD level students in view of their many benefits to the Canadian labor market.
The new changes will help the Canadian government in short-listing the serious students who can contribute to the economy of the country.
Miller said, “Our immigration system must preserve its integrity and be well-managed and sustainable. And as we look forward, we will do everything it takes to achieve that goal and set newcomers up for success.”
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Changes
The update states that students who graduate from a Canadian public university will continue to be eligible for a three-year Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). On the other hand, students from a public college will now be eligible for a three-year PGWP only if their program is linked to a sector with high labor market demand.
This course election is now more critical than ever. Students must consult with a genuine study board consultant like Pyramid eServices so that they get the right advice in course selection that can open a wide range of career possibilities.
Language Proficiency Requirement for PGWP
Another new requirement that will be implemented is that international graduates must now take an English or French language test to qualify for a work permit. University graduates applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit will need Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 7 and College Graduate CLB 5 to be eligible to apply On or after November 1, 2024. The purpose of this change is to ensure that graduates are better equipped to integrate into the Canadian workforce and meet the demands of employers.
Although students become very proficient in the English language by the time they get their graduation degree, this test will ensure that only genuine students join the workforce.
Spousal Work Permit Limitations
Canada is also limiting the availability of open work permits for spouses of international students. In order to obtain an open work permit for a spouse, the student must be enrolled in at least 16 months of master's level courses.
This requirement is aimed at attracting only serious students who genuinely want to study and gain Canadian experience.
